Statue of Robert E. Lee on the Seminary Ridge site of the battlefield.
This battle took place over July 1-3, 1863. It was a pivotal point in the war. Although there were several locations of battles in Gettysburg, the main area for the most well-known battles were the two ridges--Cemetery Ridge and Seminary Ridge that faced each other with a valley between. The Confederates placed themselves on Seminary Ridge and the Federals on Cemetery Ridge. Famous portions of this battle took place on Little Round Top where the Union troops realized its strategic importance. Little Round Top is at the southern end of Cemetery Ridge. The three pictures below on the top row are taken from Little Round Top. Looking out in the valley you can see a "T" of intersecting roads in the far right photo. On the top left hand of that "T" is Devil's Den of which close-up photos are shown in the bottom three pictures. The infamous "Pickett's Charge moved from Seminary Ridge to the "Angle" of Cemetery Ridge north of Little Round Top. There are a lot of monuments at Gettysburg.
